4 Reasons Why You Should Use a Clarifying Shampoo ASAP
Unlike the shampoo you regularly use in your hair care routine, this cleansing and clarifying hair product cuts through seriously stubborn product buildup (here’s looking at you, dry shampoo addicts!) and the environmental gunk that weighs down healthy hair. Keep reading for the benefits of a clarifying shampoo.
1. To Remove Any Hair Product Buildup
Bless our favorite styling aids, but beloved waxes, dry shampoos and hairsprays don’t always rinse down the drain—especially if you’re a once a week washer. When that buildup mixes with dirt and oil, hair can look greasy and limp.
“Anyone using two or more products in their hair on the regular is a great candidate for a clarifying shampoo once a week,” says PureArtist Ashley Hofstrand. “Your favorite products will work even better when you start with a super clean base.”
Looking for an extra clean? Use a vinegar hair rinse with apple cider vinegar for hair. after you shampoo to remove product buildup but add increase hair shine.
2. To Wash Away Hard Water Impurities & Chlorine
Stuck with hard water at home? Gentle and natural ingredients like witch hazel, baking soda and tea tree oil, like those in Purify Sulfate-Free Clarifying Shampoo, can effectively remove minerals like calcium and magnesium that coat the surface of hair after a hard water shower.
Over time, these minerals can leave hair less pliable, brittle and even fade your color. If you’re a swimmer, clarifying shampoos are helpful for removing the chlorine that leaves hair sticky (and, if you’re blonde—sometimes a lovely shade of green).
3. To Make it Easier to Style Your Hair
There’s nothing more frustrating than devoting precious minutes in the morning to coaxing hair into place only to have it fall flat by lunch. “If you find your hair isn’t styling as easily as it used to, it’s a sign you need to start using a clarifying shampoo,” says Hofstrand. A quickie detox on your strands can bring back volume, bounce and grip for better hair days—not to mention loads of shine.
4. To Protect Your Hair Color and Leave It More Vibrant
The old rule used to be that the best clarifying shampoos were a no-go for colored hair because they could strip the your hair color. But sulfate-free hair products are not only safe to use on color-treated hair—they can bring dull hair color back to life by removing some of the product and environmental gunk that dials down hair vibrancy.
Just don’t overdo it, says Hofstrand: “I’d stick with one to two clarifying washes a month, or at most, if you don’t have dry hair, once a week.”
Pro tip: Use a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo like Purify Shampoo a day or two before you color your hair so there’s a super clean base for that color pigment to sink into.
How To Use Clarifying Shampoo
If you have normal hair, use Purify, a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo, one to two times a week. If you have extremely curl or dry hair, use one to two times a month. For best results. massage the clarifying shampoo into your roots where most major product buildup is, then work the shampoo through the rest of hair. Wait a minute or two before rinsing, and repeat for a super deep clean. Then use the Vinegar Hair Rinse to add that extra shine.
“I only wash my hair once a week, so it’s always using a clarifying shampoo,” says Hofstrand. “After shampooing I always follow up with a good conditioner or a hair mask., either Hydrate Superfood Hair Treatment Mask for dry hair or Colour Fanatic Instant Deep Conditioning Hair Mask for color-treated hair, depending on how my hair texture feels that day, to lock in hydration.”
By adding a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo to your hair care routine, you’ll be on your way to beating product buildup and giving your hair a clean slate.
