Q&A With Wellness Blogger Kate Van Horn Of Kale In It

Pureology: To get things started, we’re dying to know what’s in your makeup bag. Which products do you tote around?
Kate Van Horn: I mostly use non-toxic makeup brands, such as Vapour and Juice Beauty. I don’t wear much face makeup in my day-to-day life, so I prefer to prioritize skincare and eat well to get a natural glow. One thing I always do is fill in my eyebrows and throw on some mascara before heading out to meetings or errands.
P: You made a great point about eating well and putting skincare first. Can you walk us through your daily beauty routine?
KVH: I start my day with warm lemon water with a couple drops of liquid chlorophyll in it and take my vitamins. These vitamins consist of probiotics, spirulina, ashwagandha and B12. Then comes skincare. Every morning, I wash my face and moisturize my skin. For my hair, I usually wash it and follow up with my Pureology Air Dry Cream.
P: Is there anyone that you look up to as your hair role model?
KVH: Bridgette Bardot. She had volume, curls and was a blonde. It’s the total opposite of my natural look. We always want what we don’t have, right?
P: Sometimes the best beauty advice comes through word of mouth. What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever received?
KVH: The best beauty advice I’ve ever received came from my mother who taught me sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. I didn’t listen when I was younger, but I’m starting to now and I’m so glad she emphasized sun protection. The best hair advice was to go with what comes naturally. My hair doesn’t hold a curl very well, so by embracing its natural straight and sleek look, I save my hair from a ton of heat damage.
P: What are your favorite Pureology hair products?
KVH: Hydrate Sheer my favorite shampoo. I love the scent, the ingredients and the fact that it leaves my fine hair feeling strong, not weighed down. The Air Dry Cream is my second favorite. I also suggest checking out the Strength Cure Shampoo if you have weaker hair. .
P: What’s your skincare routine?
KVH: Some of my favorites that I use every week are Franklin and Whitman’s Coffee Face Scrub, Osea Vitamin Sea Toner and Botanics’ Organic Rosehip Oil. I’ve also found that my skin is best when I’m super hydrated and not eating dairy.
P: At Pureology, we pride ourselves on creating vegan hair products. Why do you think vegan ingredients are important for hair care?
KVH: I love cooking with vegan ingredients because they are closer to the earth. Why not bring pure and simple ingredients to haircare and skincare as well? I believe in a 360-degree view of health and wellness, so it makes sense to support brands like Pureology who prioritize vegan ingredients and lifestyle.
P: Living colorfully is our motto. What does living colorfully mean to you?
KVH: Living colorfully means taking risks and knowing they will enrich your life. Every incredible experience I’ve had has come from taking a risk, getting out of my comfort zone and allowing myself to just go with the flow.
P: Making time for a wellness routine can feel overwhelming sometimes. Do you have any advice on how to stick to a routine?
KVH: I prioritize yoga classes or the gym about 4 times per week, eat a plant at each meal and drink a lot of water. I like to believe that wellness routines don’t have to be super structured, it’s just something to balance like a checkbook. I might workout one day, eat plenty of dessert that night and go to bed by 10:00 p.m. for a great night’s rest. It all works out!
P: Are there any foods in particular that you like to incorporate into your daily meals?
KVH: If I’m working from home, breakfast consists of a green smoothie made with plant based protein and nut butter (loving cashew butter lately) for added healthy fats. Then, I’ll eat a second breakfast of sprouted toast and avocado with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Lunch is usually a salad or a veggie wrap with hummus, salsa, black bean dip, etc. Dinner varies, but lately I’ve been making a lot of cauliflower fried rice with veggies, pasture-raised eggs and gluten-free soy sauce. I also order sushi at least once a week and I’m not afraid to have pizza and wine on Friday. I’ll always have a little dessert and lately it’s been coconut whipped cream with fresh berries and coconut flakes. Yum!
P: We love checking out the plant-based recipes that you post on your blog, Kale In It. What’s your favorite recipe that you’ve created?
KVH: My favorite recipe that I’ve ever created was my vegan cashew Caesar dressing. As someone who grew up loving Caesar and ranch dressings, I tried multiple times to perfect it until I finally found a combination of seasonings and ingredients that are spot on. I make it almost every week for lunches.
P: With so much temptation around, healthy eating can be a challenge. How did you make healthy eating a part of your life?
KVH: In college I liked that healthy food was trendy, but I certainly didn’t make it a lifestyle. I’d eat horribly all day, then drink a green juice and think I was being super healthy. I also struggled with anorexia in college. When I worked though this, I found a new appreciation for my body and food. I simply ate the foods that gave me the most confidence, energy and left me feeling whole. I learned how creative and delicious real food can be. The experience of learning how to cook felt healing and led me to find my passion for blogging.
P: What are some of your favorite ingredients to work with when you’re cooking?
KVH: Cashews, and nuts in general, are a fantastic substitute for dairy. There was a time when I was so afraid of fats, but I’m glad I’m over that because without avocado or nuts I wouldn’t be able to make any of my recipes. I also only bake with coconut sugar rather than cane sugar. It’s the easiest swap, you won’t even notice the difference.
