How to Tame Frizzy Hair This Summer
There’s no way around it—hot, humid summer days mean frizzy hair is pretty much inevitable. Why? Blame the laws of science; moisture always moves from areas of high concentration to low concentration. That means that during the summer the high amount of moisture in the air (AKA humidity) is going to move into drier areas…namely, your hair. “Once the moisture gets into the hair it swells the cuticle, changing the texture,” explains Pureology artist Emily Alders. Translation: Pesky frizzies and flyaways that make your style look anything but smooth. And while you may not be able to control the weather, happily, you can easily fight frizz with the right anti-frizz products and stylings tips. Here’s what you need how to tame frizzy hair all season long."
START IN THE SHOWER
"The right shampoo and conditioner set the foundation for your style,” says Alders. For frizz-fighting purposes, the Smooth Perfection Shampoo and Condition Duo, is ideal. Both contain moisturizing and conditioning camellia oil; the more hydrated your hair is to begin with, the less humidity will be able to penetrate and cause frizz. Still, the formulas are lightweight enough that they’ll work well on any and every hair texture, without weighing it down, adds Alders.
SELECT THE RIGHT STYLER…
The best way to choose? Consider your hair type. The Smooth Perfection line contains a little something for everyone; Alders suggests the Lightweight Smoothing Lotion for finer strands, the Smoothing Serum for light to medium textures, and the Intense Smoothing Cream for thick and coarse hair. There’s also the Style Shaping Gel, which Alders says, “can easily be mixed in with any of the other stylers for extra hold and control.” No matter which one you pick, you’ll reap the benefits of xylose, a sugar that that creates a protective coating around the hair. Not only does it act as a heat protectant (more on that in a minute), but it also creates a barrier that locks out humidity. Case in point: Use the shampoo, conditioner, and any one of these four stylers and you’ll get 72 hours of frizz control. Yes, please.
…AND APPLY IT CORRECTLY
No matter which styler you pick, application is key for best results. “Many people apply product when their hair is sopping wet, which just dilutes the product,” points out Pureology artist Michelle Patton. Make sure your hair is thoroughly towel-dried before going in with a styling product. Also important: “Section your hair into four pieces and work a small amount of the styler through each to ensure thorough and complete coverage,” she adds.
BLOW-DRY FOR BEST RESULTS
For the smoothest results, you need heat from a blow-dryer and tension from a brush to help stretch and smooth the hair, explains Patton. (Round brushes work best for this purpose.) Once you’ve created your newly smooth style, set it in place with a shot of cool air, which closes the hair cuticle to keep everything sleek and shiny. Because heat styling can cause damage—the last thing you want, since the more damaged and porous your hair, the more prone it is to frizz—using stylers that double as a heat protectant is key. Luckily, all of the Smooth Perfection stylers contain not only that Xylose sugar for thermal protection, but also reparative antioxidants, along with UVA and UVB sunscreens to shield your hair from color-fading sun, too.
