Hydrate vs. Hydrate Sheer

Want to know how to moisturize dry hair, but not sure which Hydrate formula to use? Learn all about the difference between Hydrate and Hydrate Sheer to be sure you’re using the right dry hair treatment for your hair type.

Having dry hair is something a lot of women can relate to. Whether it’s genetic or the result of constantly applying heat and drying stylers to your hair, it’s a major hair concern that many are looking to correct. The great news is, the best dry hair treatments and hydrating hair care formulas can do just that. Sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners made with the right beneficial ingredients can moisturize both your scalp and your strands, taking them from dull and lackluster to soft and shiny. But some ultra-hydrating ingredients can also weigh down finer strands, which is why it’s important to know the right formula for your hair type. Take a deep dive into our two best-selling Hydrate formulas and learn the difference between Hydrate and Hydrate Sheer so you can be sure your hair is looking and feeling as healthy and hydrated as possible.

Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner

Our #1 best-selling formula at Pureology is – you guessed it – our Hydrate formula. The iconic purple bottle is recognized all over the country – and even the world – by consumers and professional stylists alike, and for good reason. The super creamy, ultra-concentrated, 100% vegan, sulfate-free formulas are incredible at restoring and replenishing moisture in dull, dry hair. Soak medium to thick, textured strands in this luxe formula that takes hair from feeling as dry as the Mojave desert to as quenched as the deep Pacific waters. Tested on textured and coily hair types, be assured there’s a Hydrate formula for everyone. This duo hydrates, nourishes, adds softness and shine and has the added benefit of providing ample color protection with our patented Antifade Complex®. If you have super dry hair that also feels rough and needs some extra moisture love, supplement in our Hydrate Soft Softening Treatment once a week that’s infused with Almond Oil and Shea Butter for extra softness and nourishment.

Hydrate Sheer Shampoo & Conditioner

Merriam-Webster defines “sheer” as “of very thin or transparent texture,” and we couldn’t agree more. Our Hydrate Sheer formula provides all the benefits of our best-selling Hydrate formulas, but in a lighter, less viscous iteration intended for finer hair. If you’ve tried to moisturize dry hair with Hydrate or other moisturizing shampoos and conditioners but found your hair felt heavy or weighed down, then Hydrate Sheer may just be the formula for you. The main ingredient difference is that Hydrate Sheer is formulated with none of the silicones that Hydrate has, so the weight of the product on your hair feels lighter. And not only does it feel lighter, it actually is lighter due to the less viscous formula than the original Hydrate. It’s important to note that silicones aren’t necessarily bad for your hair – it all depends on your hair type! Medium to coarse hair can handle the weight of silicones, and they add extra slip and a protective barrier that keeps moisture in and gives a smooth, shiny finish. People with coarse, thick, curly, and dry hair will generally see the best results from products that contain silicones, while finer strands may feel weighed down. That’s why it’s important to speak to your stylist about which product is the right one for your hair type. You can also try our Hair Quiz to see which formula is right for you!
